How do you start a whirlpool tub?
You are about to enjoy relaxing hours in your own garden. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, you need to follow a few important steps to get your hot tub up and running properly. In this guide, we will take you through the process step by step - so that you can enjoy the bubbling pleasure right from the start.
Step 1: Study the operating instructions
Every whirlpool tub is different. You should therefore read the operating instructions for your model carefully to obtain all the important information. If you have any questions, contact the manufacturer.
Step 2: Rinse and drain the hot tub
Whirlpools are tested before shipping. Therefore, there may still be residual water or antifreeze in the system. Fill the whirlpool tub with 20-30 cm of water and flush the pipes by holding the garden hose close to the jets and the filter opening. Then drain it using the drain valve or a submersible pump.
Step 3: Safety first - switch off the power
Always switch off the power supply to the whirlpool before carrying out maintenance or cleaning work. Deactivate the RCD to avoid electric shocks.
Step 4: Clean the tub
Clean the tub with a non-abrasive cleaning agent and a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue that could cause foaming later.
Step 5: Install the filter
Insert a new filter cartridge. If your spa requires more than one filter, make sure to line all the wells correctly.
Step 6: Filling the whirlpool tub
Insert the garden hose into the filter area to let the water in. This will minimize the formation of air locks. If you are not using a separate hose filter, the filter area also provides an initial cleaning of the water.
Step 7: Use a water filter
A water filter is always recommended. Well water can contain minerals that clog parts of the whirlpool and tap water can cause limescale deposits. A filter removes impurities and protects your hot tub.
Step 8: Set the correct water level
The water level should be about 2-3 cm below the headrests. Make sure that the jets are completely covered with water. Too high a level can cause water loss; too low can affect filtration or cause pipes to freeze in cold climates.
Step 9: Prevent air locks
Air locks in the pump can affect performance or damage the pump. Most spas automatically eliminate air locks via the self-priming mode. If necessary, use a bleed valve or consult the operating instructions.
Step 10: Activate self-priming mode
Activate the self-priming mode (prime mode) via the control panel. Let the pump run for 10-20 seconds and then increase the speed for another 10 seconds. Repeat this process until water is circulating through all nozzles.
Step 11: Set the water chemistry
Calculate the volume of your hot tub and heat the water to 30 °C. Only use whirlpool chemicals.
-
Add disinfectant (e.g. chlorine or bromine) to the filter compartment.
-
After 10 minutes of circulation, test the water and adjust the alkalinity, pH value and calcium hardness with test strips.
Step 12: Run the pump
After adding the chemicals, run the pump at high speed for at least 10 minutes to ensure even distribution.
Step 13: Test the water
Check the water with test strips. Pay attention to the chlorine, pH and alkalinity values. Repeat the test at least once a week.
Step 14: Set the water temperature
The ideal temperature is between 36 °C and 38 °C. Try out different temperatures until you find your ideal temperature. However, never exceed 40 °C.
Step 15: Cover the whirlpool tub
Cover the whirlpool tub after the water has circulated and the desired temperature has been reached. Leave it covered for about 12 hours to allow the water to stabilize. A cover helps to save energy and maintain the temperature.
Step 16: Final water test
Finally, test the water to ensure that all chemical values are within the optimum range. Adjust the values if necessary.
Now the fun can begin!
Sit back and enjoy the soothing effect of the warm water. Remember to test the water regularly and adjust the chemicals as necessary to ensure that your hot tub remains hygienic at all times. Relax - you've earned it!
