Empty and fill the whirlpool tub correctly: This is how it works!

A private hot tub in the garden - for many, the epitome of luxury and relaxation. But to ensure that the warm bubble bath remains a lasting pleasure, regular maintenance is essential. An important part of this maintenance is completely emptying and filling the hot tub, ideally every three to four months.

Although this process may seem time-consuming, it is easy to carry out with the right instructions. In this article, you will learn step by step how to effectively drain, clean and refill your hot tub.

Why does the hot tub need to be drained at all?

Despite regular cleaning and correct water chemistry, impurities and deposits accumulate in the hot tub water over time, including

  • Chemical residues from care products,

  • Body oils and skin flakes,

  • cosmetics,

  • dirt particles.

These deposits not only impair the water quality, but can also spoil the bathing experience and endanger health as they encourage the growth of bacteria.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Remove biofilm

Before you drain the water, you should remove the biofilm in the pipes. Biofilm is a slimy layer that protects bacteria from disinfectants. Dangerous germs such as legionella or E. coli can colonize under the biofilm.

Instructions:

  • Use a special line cleaner that is added directly to the whirlpool water.

  • Allow the cleaner to circulate for at least 20 minutes. If it is very dirty or has not been cleaned for a long time, you can leave it to work for up to four hours (follow the manufacturer's instructions).

  • Brown or black foam may form during cleaning - a sign that the cleaner is dissolving the biofilm.

Tip:
To reduce the formation of biofilm in the future, you can regularly add spa enzymes to the whirlpool water. These break down oils and impurities that contribute to biofilm formation.

Step 2: Drain the water

After biofilm cleaning, you can drain the water:

  1. Turn off all power sources to prevent damage to the pump or heater.

  2. Use a submersible pump for quick draining. Alternatively, you can use the whirlpool's drain plug, but this will take longer.

Tip:
Clean the filters and cover of the hot tub during draining to save time.

Step 3: Cleaning the hot tub

After draining, you should clean the hot tub thoroughly:

  • Use a damp sponge and a suitable cleaner (e.g. vinegar or special whirlpool cleaner).

  • Make sure to clean all nooks and crannies where dirt or mold could accumulate.

  • After cleaning, rinse the whirlpool tub thoroughly with clear water to remove any cleaning agent residue.

Important:
Residues from cleaning agents can lead to foaming when filling.

Step 4: Filling the whirlpool tub

The cleaned whirlpool tub can now be filled with fresh water:

  • Use a garden hose for this.

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions in the operating instructions to carry out the filling process correctly.

Step 5: Water care

After filling, you should add the necessary water care products to ensure hygiene:

  • Chlorine or bromine: For disinfection.

  • pH regulator: For adjusting the pH value.

  • Algae inhibitor: To protect against algae growth.

Note:
Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the exact dosage of care products.

Step 6: Heat up and enjoy

Cover the hot tub after the water treatment and allow the water to heat up to the desired temperature. As soon as the water is warm enough, you can enjoy your freshly cleaned whirlpool tub.
